EAST GATE

The East Gate, also known as the Yingxi Gate, was part of the former fort of Tekchem( 竹塹城; Hsinchu roughli means New Tekchem). It is a nationally designated historic site now.

Tekchem was established in 1892. The fortress went through three stages of development- bamboo fort( 1733),  earth fort(1806) and finally stone fort( 1829) . Despite Tekchem's increasing cultural and religious importance, the region was plagued by violence between various cultural and ethno-linguistic groups at that time.
